Abandoned Bulgaria: Theatre, Sofia | Urbex

1

Rain bounced off the road and quickly turned to mist in the heat as we drove through the rural outskirts of Sofia. Almost completely hidden from the road by trees that are fighting back against the concrete, lies a small abandoned theatre.

Communist era decorative plasterwork crumbles from the walls and amber light fittings cling loosely to the ceiling, glass crunching underfoot as we creep our way through this remote building. It is clear that the building was grand in its heyday, built to serve its community and offer a place of celebration, designed to underline the successes and power of the Soviet-era communist system.
