https://discover.re/uk-urban-exploration/abandoned-hampshire-ngte-pyestock-water-treatment-plant-farnborough-urbex/ The National Gas Turbine Establishment, also known as Pyestock, was a jet engine and gas turbine testing facility that saw extensive use during the cold war. It opened in the 1940s and was expanded until its closure in 2000. From the 1950s to the 1970s it was the largest facility of its kind in Europe. The V bomber, Harrier and Tornado engines were tested on the vast site. Captured Soviet engines were also examined on the premises. The vast majority of the site has been demolished to make way for housing- we explored the final remaining structures of the abandoned facility.

https://discover.re/uk-urban-exploration/abandoned-surrey-shell-of-a-rural-house/ This house is so dilapidated it has almost become part of the landscape. Set on the outskirts of a quaint village and overlooking fields, little remains of the building. In many places the roof had collapsed; we trampled over its remains as we explored this shell of a building.

https://discover.re/uk-urban-exploration/abandoned-hampshire-stanley-park-country-estate-new-milton/ This dilapidated, barely-standing building has an unexpected history, and is in a condition only fit for total demolition. The more bizarre side of the tale of this once-grand Manor House is its most recent, but let’s start from the beginning. Whilst we are usually more coy with site descriptions on to avoid giving away locations, this house now sits behind a 10 foot high steel fence…

Kotor has been fortified since the early Middle Ages and the most eye catching landmark is Kotor fortress on San Giovanni Hill. In the valley to the east of the Fortress, hidden from view, lived the inhabitants of the oldest village in the Bay of Kotor – Špiljari. The village is over 1000 years old but only the foundations of the 20-odd houses survive along with the St Juraj Church. https://discover.re/abandoned-europe/abandoned-montenegro-spiljari-village/

This bunker was built to shelter Nazi soldiers from allied bombing in World War II, when Yugoslavia was occupied by the Nazis. We found bullet shells, graffiti and more hidden in its depths https://discover.re/abandoned-europe/abandoned-serbia-nazi-wwii-shelter/

Hidden in the rock of the Avon Gorge is this now-abandoned funicular railway. It once connected Clifton and the Grand Spa Hotel to the tramway and ferry station at the bottom of the Avon Gorge. To avoid spoiling the view of the cliffside an underground railway was proposed. On the 11th March 1893 the water-powered funicular opened its doors.

Not far from Dubrovnik, where hotel prices soar and vacancies are filled in the busy tourist season, the hotels in the bay of Kupari aren’t taking any bookings. Despite their prime location, stunning sea views and once-grand architecture, the complex of seven luxury hotels hasn’t seen anyone check in for over 30 years. They remain abandoned, their walls ridden with graffiti and bullet holes. The site has recently been used for the filming of a popular Mr Beast video, as well as a set location for the wartime drama “Lee” featuring Kate Winslet. This bunker was built in the late 1940s or early 50s by Tito- the leader of Yugoslavia, in a strategic position with views over the flatlands towards Hungary. The bunker was built into a cliff face, and housed four Anti-aircraft guns, with beds for 24 soldiers. During WWII, Hungary had been allied with Nazi Germany, and had occupied parts of Yugoslavia. Though relations between Hungary and Yugoslavia improved after the war, Hungary was closely allied to Stalin’s USSR. In 1948, the relationship between Tito (Yugoslavia) and Stalin (USSR) reached boiling point, and Tito’s Yugoslavia felt it had to be prepared for a potential attack from Hungary. https://discover.re/abandoned-europe/abandoned-serbia-1950s-air-defence-bunker/

Belvedere Hotel was opened as a 5* resort in 1985 when Croatia was part of Yugoslavia. It had over 200 rooms, a helipad and a private boat dock. It’s easy to imagine why the hotel was so popular – it has unrivalled views across the water to the island of Lokrum and into the old town of Dubrovnik. The sea-level amphitheater was used on the set of Game of Thrones. The crest of House Baratheon was painted on the floor and was the stage for the battle between the Red Viper and the Mountain. Locals have painted over the crest with the emblem of Hajduk, a well loved Croatian football team. The ruins were also used for filming of the biopic about the WWII Vogue journalist Lee Miller. https://discover.re/abandoned-europe/abandoned-croatia-belvedere-hotel-dubrovnik/
