Abandoned Montenegro: Earthquake-Damaged Factory, Kotor

0

For most the gritty, grotty outskirts are quickly passed on the walk from the bus stop to the tourist centre; something to be avoided and not the most slightly welcome. However abandonment and decay was just the greeting to the historic, fortified town of Kotor we were hoping for.

Riviera soap factory was founded in 1926 and is the oldest remaining industrial architecture in Kotor, and one of the tallest buildings in the town. Although on the outskirts, the ruined, towering remains of the chimney are visible from across Kotor.

Parts of the factory were extended from 1926 to 1938 and again after the Second World War, until it suffered severe damage in a powerful earthquake which struck Montenegro in 1979.

The building has remained derelict ever since, and is privately owned by a company called “Rivijere,” whose owner was a businessman from Kotor. In 2012 bricks fell from the building, which is beside a main road, bringing to light the frustrations of locals over the fact the building is still abandoned. Locals report that people have been living in the vast building.

With an ice cream in hand to combat the stuffing heat, the stench of urine wasn’t the most pleasant entrance as I ducked through the overgrown gap in the wall. The imposing tower was the most notable part of this abandoned building. In its heyday this building would have been an impressive sight, with ornate curves and an art deco flair.
