Abandoned Dorset: Unfinished Cottage

0

At the side of a picturesque country road that wound its way through a remote valley, lies this unfinished and abandoned cottage.

Built of local stone, the structure doesn’t seem to have been far off completion. The date stone on the building shows that it was constructed in 2007, so perhaps the financial crash of 2008 hampered its completion.

The double storey cottage was built into a hill, meaning at points the first floor was level with the ground. We clambered through a window that had never been glazed, into the shell of a building. The interior was empty bar with a few bits of litter- just bare breeze block walls and a bare floor. Even the internal walls had never been constructed.

What was once a staircase was now just a few floating steps with a pile of rubble below. Making our way to the ground floor (climbing due to the lack of staircase), we were met with a similarly soulless, empty space.

Outside there were a few older outbuildings, strewn with rubble and debris, and an abandoned caravan. Whilst we haven’t found any solid history on this fairly insignificant abandoned house, we can only assume that this labour of love was abandoned due to lack of funds. Perhaps the owners of the land were living in the caravan during construction. It’s a shame to see what would make a pretty little cottage in a beautiful location left to rot and ruin.
